7 Tips to be a Successful Freelance Photographer

Aug 31, 2018
Author: Brooke Moore

Do you want to become a freelance photographer? Having your own photography business can give you freedom, flexibility and fulfillment. If you aren't sure where to start, I'm going to share my 7 best tips for becoming a successful freelance photographer. Freelance photography can be a little different than other freelance gigs as it poses some special challenges. For example, all the gadgets you need to start this freelance business are quite expensive compared to other freelance businesses. To get started in writing, for instance, all you really need is a laptop or desktop computer. You will also need to have a good understanding of photography techniques and how the camera works. That said, I have some tips for getting your business off the ground with the necessary basics. I will also show you how to stand out so you can be the most successful that you can be.

Freelancer type jobs

1. Purchase Your Equipment

The first thing you need to do is invest in good equipment for your business, so you can be confident in your ability to perform your job.

A nice camera, lenses and a flash are the most common pieces of equipment that you'll need to get your freelance photography business off the ground. You may also need reflectors, lights, a backdrop and props.

Out of all the equipment you will need to purchase, a few good lenses are the most important. Different lenses mean different photography capabilities. So, once you start bringing in more money, I recommend that you spend some of that money to purchase new lenses.

To learn more about the prices of photography equipment, check out this detailed guide on how much does it cost to start a photography business. Then, come back to Freelancermax.com to book your first freelance gig!

2. Set Up Your Website

As a freelance photographer, you'll need a professional photography website to show off your work, build a portfolio and market your business. Keep in mind that a website can be used for more than just a portfolio. Your website can be a way to communicate with clients, schedule sessions, manager orders and deliver your completed work.

All-in-all, having a website is important! The best way to start is with a WordPress site and a good photography template to show off your skills. Another option is to search for a freelance website designer on FreelancerMax.com to help your vision come to life!

3. Build Your Portfolio

Every freelance photographer needs a portfolio to show off their work and attract clients.
When you are first starting out, I recommend finding a few friends or family members and doing some work for free to build your portfolio. You can also find local models who need portraits for their modeling portfolio, and that way you both benefit!

4. Get Your First Clients

There are many online platforms for photographers to get traction and clients, such as FreelancerMax.com, Instagram.com and blogging.

Create an instagram or a blog and write/post regularly to attract new clients. Follow other photographers and see what their instagrams or blogs look like and how the are attracting a following and clients. A blog also helps your website visitors to become clients by teaching them about your work and helping them to trust you as a professional.

It's also a good idea to keep in touch with existing clients on a regular basis by keeping them updated via an email newsletter. Creating a strong network can help you get repeat clients, and additional work through referrals.

5. Create a Schedule

Once you start getting a steady flow of clients, you will have a lot of tasks to complete each day, and it's important to have a detailed schedule so that you can stay organized.

I recommend that you use the BirchPress Scheduler WordPress plugin on your website to take appointments and show your availability to clients. I also suggest investing in a planner. Hey, you can never be too organized!

6. Edit Before Delivery

The best way to become successful as a freelance photographer is to produce such amazing work for your clients that they tell all of their family and friends about you and your amazing business.

To do that, you should always edit and enhance your photos before delivering them to your clients. If you aren’t already familiar with Photoshop, it might not be a bad idea to take a class or start learning more about how to edit and enhance your clients photos to produce the best work that you can for them. A cheap and easy way to do this is to check out Youtube.com for some editing tutorials.

7. Boost Your Confidence

You should be confident in your photography skills: you are a professional photographer. If you are going to be successful as a freelancer, you need to show potential clients that you can confidently deliver the work they need.

Take experience from multiple shoots. Note what worked and what didn't work in different situations and apply that new knowledge in future shoots. The more experience you get, the more you will hone in on your skills. You will become a more confident photographer with every step.

That's all. I hope this article helped you to know the 7 best tips to become a successful freelance photographer. Don't forget to check out FreelancerMax.com to book your gigs! Do you have more tips to add? Comment below!
